Types and causes of headaches in Potomac

In general, headaches stem from several sources, such as stress, bright lights, certain foods and more. They also can be related to hard and soft tissues--that is, your vertebral bones, nerves. muscles and connective tissues--and the joints in the spinal column. These kinds of headaches, says the Canadian Chiropractic Association, are called cervicogenic headaches, because they originate in the cervical, or neck, portion of the spinal column.

Other headaches are the familiar migraines. Plaguing more women than men, migraines are intense and even debilitating. Running in families, migraines seem triggered by certain foods, flickering lights, the menstrual cycle and loud, repetitive noise. They can last for days as blood vessels in the head constrict and then release, causing a characteristic throbbing sensation.

More common in men are cluster headaches. They happen in groups, or clusters, of three or four, and last several days. Typically, they are confined to one side of the head.

How your chiropractor can help

Your chiropractors at King Chiropractic in Potomac, Gaithersburg, Clarksburg and Urbana take a team approach to helping patients who suffer with headaches. He will consult with the primary care physician as needed and also perform his own chiropractic examination and digital imaging to track down the sources of headache pain. An accurate report of your symptoms and your medical, surgical and prescription history is important, too.

Often, subluxations, or misalignments of the cervical spine, precipitate acute or chronic headaches. Your chiropractor knows how to make effective spinal adjustments to take pressure off nerves and muscles, allowing for better function and blood flow. He also understands other kinds of treatments, such as soft tissue massage, nutritional therapies, biofeedback, physical therapies, and exercise regimens which relieve the stress and pressure on spinal nerves and muscles, reducing or eliminating the physical causes of headache pain.
