Sudden back pain can be troubling - you likely wonder about the cause and what you can do to alleviate it. The medical team at King Chiropractic in Urbana, Maryland often treat sciatica as a common cause of back pain. sciatica

What is sciatica?

When the sciatic nerve in the lower back becomes irritated, pain, numbness and tingling will occur. Sciatica pain is described as cramping, shooting or a "burning" feeling that typically starts in the lower back and radiates down the back of the leg, sometimes as low as to the ankle and foot area. It usually affects one side of the body and the degree of sciatic pain varies from patient to patient seen by your Urbana chiropractor.

How did my sciatic nerve become irritated?

The sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body, starts in the lower spine (the lumbar region). Its branches extend downward through the pelvic area, behind the thighs and knees, and all the way to the feet. It carries signals back and forth between the legs and the brain. Any problem with the sciatic nerve sends a pain signal to the brain.

Sciatica is usually a result of a herniated (displaced) vertebral disc that is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Aging, heavy lifting or trauma can all cause sciatica. This is a common complaint during mid to late pregnancy, as the body structure begins to change to accommodate the growing fetus. In these cases, your sciatica will resolve after birth.

What can be done for my sciatica?

If you think you might be dealing with sciatica, visiting your Urbana chiropractor as soon as possible is crucial. Drs. King, Groves, Alexander and Vaky all have extensive training and experience at diagnosing a myriad of back problems, including sciatica. The treatment your Urbana chiropractor recommends for sciatica will vary by patient. Many times, the sciatic nerve responds well to a combination of chiropractic and physical therapy. Sciatica cases that require surgery are rare; it's estimated that 80 to 90 percent of patients fully recover after treatment.
