Wondering why you're suffering from arthritis pain. Your chiropractors at King Chiropractic in Gaithersburg, Urbana, Clarksburg and arthritisPotomac, MD explain what causes arthritis.

Why do I have arthritis?

Although there are several types of arthritis, most people suffer from either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, the two most common types. Osteoarthritis usually occurs due to wear and tear and is frequently associate with aging. You may also develop osteoarthritis if you injured a joint years at some point in time, have a family history of arthritis or are obese.

This form of arthritis occurs when the cartilage that coats and protects the ends of your joints begins to wear away. When this happens, the ends of your bones rub together, causing pain, stiffness, swelling and trouble moving the affected joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs due to an immune system malfunction. If you have this type of arthritis, your immune system attacks the capsules that surround your joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, fever and fatigue. Because the disease is progressive, it usually spreads to other joints. In some cases, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect your lungs, heart, kidneys, eyes or skin.

What can I do if I have arthritis?

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories can be effective in reducing pain and inflammation around your joints. Ointments, creams, gels or patches that contain salicylic acid, capsaicin or other pain-relieving substances can also be helpful. If drugstore products don't reduce your pain, your doctor can prescribe drugs that may be more effective.
