How do we diagnose neck pain?

We will discuss the symptoms you’ve been experiencing and then examine your spine to check its overall health, since other regions may also be affected. When it comes to treating a patient, we focus on treating everyone as a whole. This may mean offering you advice on nutrition, managing stress, ergonomics, and other lifestyle factors that may play into your neck pain.

In addition to the physical exam, we may also need to perform imaging tests, like X-rays or an MRI, to diagnose the exact cause of your pain.

How will we treat your neck pain?

Your treatment plan will depend on the cause and severity of your neck pain. Here are some of the most common types of chiropractic techniques we use to help reduce your symptoms:

  • Spinal manipulation: By manually applying a gentle force to certain areas of the spine, we can help to improve range-of-motion and joint mobility to help reduce pain.
  • Flexion distraction manipulation: By focusing on just one vertebra at a time, we can help to release pressure in certain areas of the spine to reduce pain and increase movement by applying gentle spinal manipulation.
  • Instrument manipulation: By using handheld instruments, we can apply the proper amount of force to manipulate certain areas of the spine.

We may also recommend any of these other therapies:

  • Therapeutic massage
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Manual joint stretching
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Ultrasound

Whiplash is a fairly common neck injury that typically results from a forceful jerking or back and forth motion of the neck, such as when a whiplashdriver or passenger in a car is rear-ended in an accident, or from forceful shaking. Like any strain in the neck, back, or elsewhere in the body, the degree of pain, and severity of the symptoms will vary from person to person, depending on several factors.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Depending on the extent of the injury, the most common symptom of whiplash is a pain in the neck and shoulders. However, some people may also experience pain in the arms and back. Other common symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Headache
  • Muscle spasms
  • Trouble focusing
  • Tenderness
  • Stiff neck
  • Sensation of pins and needles
  • Nerve problems
  • Blurry vision
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Limited range of motion in neck

People suffering from whiplash generally begin to experience symptoms within 24 hours of the injury. While mild cases often resolve on their own and may not require medical attention, it is important to see a specialist if neck or back pain occurs after a car, workplace, or sports-related accident, in order to rule out potentially serious problems like fractures, tears, or tissue damage.

Recovering from Whiplash

The recovery period will vary from person to person. In many cases, symptoms generally tend to resolve within a few months, while other people can develop chronic pain that lasts several years. Cases with more intense and rapid onset of symptoms sometimes take longer to heal in certain patients.
