Find Out Whether Your Aches And Pains Could Be Due To Arthritis

If you think you are suffering from arthritis, you certainly aren’t alone. Arthritis can affect people of any age, and according to the CDC, approximately 52.5 million American adults have reported having some form of arthritis and about 294,000 children under 18 also suffer from this condition. If you’re concerned that your joint aches and stiffness could be due to arthritis, your Clarksburg chiropractor can help!

What are the telltale signs that you may be suffering from arthritis in Clarksburg?

  • Joint pain and stiffness that develops over time (this is most common with osteoarthritis)
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Stiffness in the hands, arms or legs, particularly upon waking (this is common in those with rheumatoid arthritis)
If you have infectious arthritis you may also experience stabbing pains, fever and chills.

What are the different types of arthritis?

  1. Osteoarthritis: This is the most common type of arthritis and occurs when the cartilage around the bones begins to wear down. This condition is gradual and can occur in any joint in your body; however, most people complain of problems with their knees, spine or hips. There is no cure for osteoarthritis and the condition is progressive. However medications, chiropractic treatment and lifestyle changes can help to lessen symptoms.
  2. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): This form of arthritis affects about 15 million Americans and is more prevalent in women than men. Symptoms of RA can change from day to day and those with RA often experience flare-ups. These symptom flare-ups can last anywhere from a couple days to months. Those with RA often complain of swollen, red joints and joint stiffness in the morning. While there is no cure for RA, there are many medications that can help reduce inflammation and reduce symptoms.
  3. Infectious arthritis: This type of arthritis is caused by a bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Those with infectious arthritis will experience severe joint pain and swelling. Infectious arthritis can be caused by handling or eating infected food or through other problems like Lyme disease. If treated properly this type of arthritis is curable. For bacterial forms, an antibiotic will most likely be prescribed. A viral infection often goes away by itself and fungal infection may be treated with an anti-fungal medication.
