Herniated Disc and How Your Chiropractor Can Help
Herniated disks, also called slipped discs, can cause pain that starts in your back or neck and extends to your arms or legs. The chiropractors at King Chiropractic in Gaithersburg, Potomac, Urbana and Clarksburg, MD, share some information about herniated discs and explain how chiropractic treatment can help relieve your painful symptoms.
What are discs?
Oval discs are made up of cartilage and cushion the spaces between the vertebrae in your spine. They're comprised of a tough outer covering and a soft core. If you have a herniated disc, the soft inner layer begins to protrude through the opening, the same way jelly begins to ooze out of a hole in a doughnut. Unfortunately, when the inner layer protrudes, it may press on nerves in your spine, causing the uncomfortable symptoms associated with a herniated disk.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disk?
If you have a herniated disk, you may notice pain that ranges from mild to excruciating. The location of your pain will depend on the location of the herniated disk. If the problem occurs in your neck, you'll probably experience pain in your neck that radiates to your arms. A herniated disk in your lower back not only causes back pain but also triggers pain that runs down your legs.

Your range of motion may be affected, and you may notice that the pain worsens in the evenings and when you walk, sit or stand. Other symptoms may include numbness in your back, neck, arms or legs, weak muscles and tingling and burning sensations.
Herniated discs are often related to aging. The water content of your discs lessens over time, which decreases their flexibility. When discs are less flexible, they're more likely to become herniated. In most cases, the problem doesn't occur after a major injury but may happen if you twist or bend. If your job involves a lot of bending, lifting, pulling or pushing, you may be more likely to develop the condition.
