Home Remedies for Sciatica

x-ray of nerves with sciatica pain
When sciatica pain flares up, it may seem as if nothing will dull the pain. Luckily, several home remedies can help you manage the uncomfortable symptoms of this common condition. Dr. L. Neil King, Dr. Kelly Groves, Dr. Mark Alexander and Dr. Andrew Vaky--your Gaithersburg, Potomac, Clarksburg and Urbana, MD chiropractors at King Chiropractic--share a few tips that may help you the next time you experience sciatica pain.
Use cold and hot packs
Both cold and hot packs can help relieve sciatica pain. When you experience a flare up of your symptoms, apply ice to your back and leg throughout the day to reduce inflammation and dull painful nerve sensations. Switch to hot packs a few days later to increase blood flow or alternate hot and cold packs.
Take over-the-counter pain relievers
Over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, not only relieve pain but can also reduce inflammation that can make your symptoms feel worse.
Try yoga or other types of gentle stretches
Stretching your back muscles helps strengthen them and also improves blood flow to spinal disks and nerves. When blood flow increases, inflammation may decrease. Yoga poses can be helpful if you experience sciatica, as long as you avoid poses that can stress your back. Low-impact exercise, such as walking or swimming, can also reduce your symptoms.
Apply natural pain relievers
Natural pain relieving gels, ointments and patches made with capsaicin, cayenne pepper or St. John's wort oil, can help decrease the intensity of nerve pain. Although using these products may be uncomfortable at first, applying them regularly can help reduce pain.
What can I do if home remedies don't help?
When you've tried all of the home remedies and are in still in pain, it's time to visit your chiropractor in Gaithersburg, Potomac, Clarksburg and Urbana. Chiropractic treatment can help reduce inflammation and pain, improve healing and increase mobility.
