Is Your Leg Pain Due To Sciatica?
While it may seem normal to have aches and pain every once and a while, it can be rather unnerving to notice severe leg pain while just sitting still. If you’ve been noticing persistent pain in one leg you could be dealing with sciatica. Sciatica often arises around the time that a more serious back or spinal issue erupts. If you’ve been dealing with leg or back pain, it’s time to talk to your Urbana chiropractor.
What is sciatica?
Sciatica isn’t considered a disorder but rather a symptom that is caused by another condition. This condition affects the sciatic nerve, which runs along the back of the leg. Several problems can cause sciatica including a pinched nerve, a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis or a spinal joint dysfunction. However, pregnancy, muscle strain and even an infection can cause sciatica.

Most patients with sciatica experience at least one of the following symptoms:
- Persistent pain on one side of the buttock or leg
- Pain that gets worse when sitting
- A burning sensation that runs down the leg
- Sharp or shooting pains that make it hard to stand or walk
- Weakness or numbness in the leg
Pain can range from mild and sporadic to constant and debilitating. Patients will experience sciatica symptoms differently depending on the root cause of the condition; however, those who suffer from sciatica will usually only experience pain on one side of the body.
How do you treat sciatica?
The main way to treat sciatica is to treat the underlying condition; however, an exercise regime can help relieve some of the painful symptoms. Over-the-counter painkillers, heat/ice therapy and steroid injections are more conservative forms of treatment.

For chiropractic care of sciatica, we often use a combination of chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture and massage therapy for relieving your symptoms.
For the rare cases of sciatica that are severe and don’t respond to treatment, lower back surgery is recommended. The surgery will focus on removing the pinched nerve to help relieve pressure and pain. Surgery offers a 90 percent to 95 percent success rate for those with sciatica.
