Find out more about this common issue and how it is alleviated.

Are you experiencing pain that you think might be sciatica? Want to know how our Gaithersburg, Urbana, Clarksburg, and Potomac, MD chiropractor can help? Then you’ve come to the right place.
What is sciatica?
When you hear about sciatica you may think it is a condition but really it’s a symptom of an underlying issue. Sciatica is pain that runs down the sciatic nerve, which starts at your lower back and runs down your hips and butt all the way to your legs. Sciatica usually affects only one side.
What are the common causes of sciatica?
Sciatic pain can arise as a result of a herniated disc, nerve compression, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) or a bone spur on the spine. Any of these conditions can cause swelling, pain or even numbness in the affected leg.
How is sciatica treated?
Before we even start a treatment plan it’s important for your chiropractor in Gaithersburg, Urbana, Clarksburg, and Potomac to determine the cause of your sciatica. By discussing your medical history, and performing a physical exam and other diagnostic tests like MRIs or an X-ray we can help determine which chiropractic techniques will help the most.
The goal of chiropractic care is to help the body heal itself in a non-invasive way without the use of medications. The type of chiropractic care we recommend will depend on the cause of your sciatica. Many chiropractic treatment plans include:
  • Spinal adjustment/manipulation: This is the basic foundation of chiropractic care. By realigning the vertebrae of the spine, we can help take pressure off certain areas of the spine to reduce inflammation, nerve compression, spasms, pain and other symptoms. Spinal adjustments are both safe and effective.
  • Ice therapy: Through the use of ice or cold therapy we can help to reduce inflammation and thereby reduce pain.
  • Ultrasound: By sending sound waves through deep tissue we can help to improve circulation and reduce swelling, cramping, pain and spasms.
  • TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation): This muscle stimulating machine sends electrical currents through the body to control both pain and muscle spasms.
We know chiropractic care is a great option for so many people dealing with chronic or even acute aches and pains and you could benefit, too!
